How much text fits on each network

Every network has its own ceiling and none of them warns you until you have already hit publish. Paste the caption you wrote, tick the networks you publish to, and you will see at once where it fits, how much room is left and what would be left out. The limits come from the same table that checks a post before it goes out.

  • The ceiling is not what someone reads before tapping "more". Almost every network truncates the preview long before the limit, and where it truncates is not measured here.
  • The file counts are the ones checked before sending. A network can still refuse a file afterwards over its weight, its duration or its aspect ratio, and that is what the sizes and safe zones calculator is for.
  • There is no hashtag or mention rule on this page, because no network declares one: the day one does, this page will show it on its own.
  • A caption that fits is not a caption that works. The counter tells you whether it goes out, not whether it is worth sending.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the counter show more characters than I can see?

Because an emoji takes one position on screen and two in the count. Every network ceiling is written in UTF-16 text units and the pre-publish check measures them that way, so a caption full of emoji runs over sooner than it looks. This page shows both figures so the gap does not catch you at the moment you send.

Where do these limits come from?

From the same table a post is refused by before it goes out, not from an article somebody copied. That is why this page carries no "last reviewed" date: when a network changes its ceiling and the table changes, the page changes with it and nobody has to remember to come back and edit it.

Is there a hashtag or mention ceiling?

None of the fourteen networks declares one in the data this page reads, so none is shown. We would rather leave the column out than fill it with second hand figures a reader has no way of checking against anything.

Does a title count separately from the caption?

On YouTube, Pinterest and Reddit it does: the title is a field of its own with a ceiling of its own, and you will see it on each of those cards. TikTok photo posts have no second field at all, the text is the title for as long as it fits and past that it travels whole as the description. Everywhere else there is only a caption.
